3 Things You Need To Know About Being Pulled Over For A DUI

Posted on

Getting pulled over for a suspected DUI can be very serious. Although it seems that people in the media are constantly getting DUI charges with little consequences, this is not the case in the real world. The courts come down pretty hard on people who have DUI charges, which is why it is so important that you drink and drive responsibly. Here are a couple things you should know about being pulled over for a DUI.

1. Comply With The Officer

If the officer has a reason to suspect that you are driving under the influence then they can pull you over. They don't have to have hard evidence, they just have to have a suspicion  that you were drinking and driving. This means that you should comply with their requests.

Many people do not know that you can be arrested for not complying with an officer. Thus, even if you haven't been drinking, but you are rude and disrespectful to the officer, you could still be arrested. You should do what the officer asks, and then if anything is fishy, file a complaint later.

2. Don't Refuse Any Sobriety Test

Each state has different laws if you have to take a sobriety test. This means that if you are pulled over and asked to take the test, you shouldn't refuse. Usually if someone is refusing to take the test it means that they have high alcohol levels in their blood. Someone who hasn't been drinking would be happy to take a breathalyzer test seeing that it will save them.

Thus, take the test and hope for the best. You really can't refuse it.

3. Ask For A Lawyer

If you are arrested for the DUI you should call a lawyer right away. You should not answer any questions from the officer until you have been appointed a lawyer or hired one yourself.

A DUI charge could be very detrimental to your record. Your employment could be compromised, you could owe a good deal in fines, and even spend time in jail. This is why it is important that you have someone on your side who understands the laws and the procedure of the court so that you can get the best sentence possible. You should ask for a lawyer even if you are innocent.

These are just a couple things you need to know about encountering the police for a DUI charge.
